Exercising the toes • Flexion—curl the toes (Figure 13.67A). • Extension—straighten the toes (Figure 13.67B). • Abduction—spread the toes apart (Figure 13.68). • Adduction—pull the toes together. Exercising the foot • Support the foot and ankle by placing one hand under the patient’s foot and your other hand under the patient’s ankle. • Pronation—turn the outside of the foot up and the inside down (Figure 13.66A). • Supination—turn the inside of the foot up and the outside down (Figure 13.66B). Go to the other side of the bed and lower the bed rail, if it is up. 20. Repeat these exercises for the other side of the body from the shoulder down. Follow-up 21 Make sure the patient is safe and comfortable. Place the call light and personal items within easy reach. Lower the bed and raise the bed rails, if needed. 22. Wash your hands to ensure infection control. Reporting and Documentation 23. Communicate any specific observations, fi complications, or unusual responses to the appropriate provider. Also record this information in the patient’s chart or EMR.
