Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. 819 Chapter 24 Track Steering Systems Steering Clutch and Brake Systems A tractor with a steering clutch and brake system is normally equipped with a torque converter and powershift transmission. Figure 24-7 shows the basic power flow through a large Caterpillar steering clutch and brake dozer as it moves along the following path: 1. Engine. 2. Torque divider (torque converter). 3. Driveshaft. 4. Transmission (operator selects speed and direction). 5. Transfer gears. 6. Bevel gears. 7. Inner axle shafts. 8. Steering clutches and brakes. 9. Outer axle shafts. 10. Double reduction final drives. The torque divider sends power through a driveshaft to the rear of the machine where the transmission is located. The design of the transmission input and output shafts allows power to enter through the input shaft and exit via the output shaft to the transfer gear set, which sends power to the bevel gear set.
