Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. 821 Chapter 24 Track Steering Systems The operator selects the direction of propulsion and the transmission speed first, such as forward first gear. The positions of the steering clutch and brake controls dictate if the tractor will be propelled or steered or both. For the example in Figure 24-11, the steering clutch and brake controls have just three positions. If both steering levers remain all the way forward, the tractor travels straight in one direc- tion, either forward or in reverse depending on the transmission control lever. If one steering lever is pulled halfway or fully backward, the tractor steers. See the table in Figure 24-12 and the mechanical control levers in Figure 24-13. The status of the steering clutches and brakes on the left or right side of the machine is determined by the position of the corresponding steering control lever. Figure 24-12. The operator’s movement and positioning of the steering levers determine the directional steering of the tractor.
