Electronic communication refers to the use
of electronic technology for communication.
Devices used for electronic communication
include computers, cell phones, two-way radios,
pagers, and hand-held computers. The successful
businessperson of today must know how to use
these devices.
The hospitality industry is increasingly
using wireless communication devices.
Restaurants use wireless hand-held computers
to transmit orders to the kitchen. The kitchen
uses a wireless device to notify the server when
the order is ready, 23-10. Hosts and hostesses
use wireless devices to alert guests when their
tables are ready.
E-mail has become an important communi-
cation technology. Many businesses use e-mail
in place of business letters. E-mail is also used
for internal communications. In a hotel, workers
from various departments communicate with
each other by e-mail. Many hospitality busi-
nesses use e-mail to alert their customers to
