Many people find a job in hospitality and
are very happy. Others want to advance in their
careers. If you want to advance in your career,
you must take active steps. Active steps for
advancement include continuing education,
developing leadership skills, being active in
professional organizations, and changing jobs.
Continuing Education
In order to advance, you must continually
improve your job skills. Many employers offer
classes and seminars for their employees. Take
advantage of them. Some employers will pay
for classes at a college or professional school,
especially if they are related to your job. Many
professional organizations offer classes and
workshops, 23-29. Some also offer certification
classes. These are also worthwhile.
Leadership
Leadership is the ability to influence others
and to inspire excellence. Leadership is a critical
skill for people who want to start their own
businesses or get promoted to upper manage-
ment jobs in their companies. Leadership skills
are developed by being in positions of leader-
ship. People often develop leadership skills by
volunteering to lead projects at work. People
also develop leadership skills through involve-
ment with social, community, civic, volunteer,
and professional organizations. As a student,
involvement in career and technical student
organizations, student government, clubs, and
extracurricular activities can also provide
leadership development opportunities, 23-30.
