a shorter weekend vacation taken more often is
preferred. These travelers usually stay in a hotel
or motel.
What types of vacations do people take? Some
travel to visit historical sites or natural wonders.
Some take trips for romantic reasons, such as a
honeymoon. Others travel somewhere to rest, read,
ski, snorkel, or go backpacking. Families often like
to travel to visit relatives or pursue hobbies such
as mountain biking or fi shing, 1-7.
Because travel is often necessary for business
success, most companies budget a certain amount of
money for travel every year. The amount budgeted
may increase or decrease depending on economic
factors. Business travel, including business confer-
ences and events, is responsible for nearly 23 percent
of all travel conducted in the United States.
Tourism
The tourism industry consists of businesses
that organize and promote travel for business, lei-
sure, and other purposes. Businesses in the tourism
industry include travel agencies, tour operators,
cruise companies, meeting and convention plan-
ners, convention and visitors bureaus, and travel
and tourism offi ces.
One of the main functions of tourism busi-
nesses is to plan various types of trips. A vacation,
for example, might involve several different hos-
pitality businesses. Suppose you want to attend
a Detroit Tigers baseball game at Comerica Park
in Detroit, Michigan, 1-8. This trip might involve
the following: transportation by bus to Detroit and
back home, two nights stay at a motel, meals at
several restaurants, tickets to the baseball game,
