Chapter 6 The Evolution of Exteriors
187
Increasingly, various agencies, local
governments, and private organizations
are identifying properties that represent
architectural value and importance.
One such group is the National Trust for
Historical Preservation. This group iden-
tifies such structures and grants them fi
landmark status. Once they become
landmarks, these buildings cannot
undergo destruction or significant alter- fi
ation. A person who helps restore these
buildings is an historical preservationist.
Restoration work follows careful
guidelines to insure that materials, colors,
and designs are true to the original era of
a building’s construction. In this way,
society preserves the best of its past for
future generations to experience, 6-27.
