is unique. What is beautiful to you may not be
beautiful to someone else. In fact, the same objects
may not appear beautiful to you as you mature.
An appreciation of beauty develops over time as
exposure to it increases. Beautiful surroundings,
such as those in Figure 1.7, can make you feel
content and relaxed. This is important to keep in
mind as you think about a possible career as a
housing or interior design professional.
Self-Expression
Showing your true personality and taste is
self-expression. Self-expression is evident when
choosing a color palette for the design of your home
or the home of a client. Those colors are often a clue
to an individual’s personality. For instance, someone
with an outgoing, vibrant personality might show
it by using bright, bold colors inside his or her home
(Figure 1.8). In contrast, a person with a quiet,
subdued personality might show it by using pale, soft
colors. Furnishings can also help express personality.
Creativity
Creativity is the ability to use imaginative skill
to make something new. Combining two or more
things or ideas into a new whole that has beauty or
value is another way to describe creativity. You show
creativity when you express your ideas to others.
Your housing provides opportunities for you to
express your creativity. Primitive people exhibited
creativity when they painted pictures on the walls
of their cave dwellings. Today, people still use
painting to express their creativity. Likewise, some
people enjoy gardening and working with fl owers.
