Chapter 3 Boilers 55 CAREER CONNECTIONS Sales Representative A boiler sales representative sells boilers and other equipment to businesses, institutions such as schools and churches, and to government facilities on behalf of a manufacturer or wholesaler. The sales representative works directly for the manufacturer or wholesaler, or he or she may work for an independent sales agency whose clients are manufacturers or wholesalers. The sales representative demonstrates products to customers—showing them the benefits of improving building comfort and performance while reducing energy costs. There are generally two types of sales reps: an inside sales rep who typically works in an office, and an outside sales rep who travels directly to the customer’s facility. Both types of sales representatives work independently or with teams to devel- op sales programs that exceed revenue goals. Sales reps should have experience developing and closing potential sales leads and a background in the mechanical construction industry—including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, preferably with residential and commercial boilers. They should possess experience in inventory control and be capable of generating sales proposals based on mechanical and architectural plans and specifications. Effective written and verbal communication skills are a must. The annual salary for an experienced boiler sales representative can range from $50,000 to over $100,000 per year and include a compensation package with insur- ance benefits and a 401(k) retirement plan. There may also be opportunities for inside sales training on new products.
