436  Interiors  Copyright  Goodheart-Willcox  Co.,  Inc.  ■  Contour.  Originating  in  the  art  field,  a  contour  drawing  or  sketch  is  one  that  follows  the  visible  edges  of  a  shape.  The  contour  is  the  outermost  edges  of  a  form  as  well  as  changes  of  plane  within  the  form.  It  is  not  about  detail,  but  about  the  mass  of  the  object.  When  finished,  it  looks  like  a  silhouette  of  the  object.  Shading  is  not  needed  in  a  contour  sketch,  Figure  13-8.  ■  Thumbnail.  These  rapidly  executed  tiny  sketches  are  about  the  size  of  an  adult’s  thumbnail.  Rather  than  spending  time  creating  finished  drawings,  these  doodle-like  sketches  serve  to  get  the  creative  juices  flowing.  Designers  often  use  them  during  the  Schematic  design  process  or  to  capture  an  idea  or  an  inspirational  detail.  These  sketches  are  not  finished,  formal,  or  typically  used  in  professional  design  presentations.  See  Figure  13-9.
