Light casts shade and shadows on or around objects and spaces. A value study makes a two-dimensional sketch appear three dimensional through the use of shade and shadow. These studies offer realism, depth, and distance. Designers use value studies in a variety of sketches and typically in Schematic Design or Design Development phases, Figure 13-10.
