446 Interiors Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Contour drawings help you develop the skill of truly seeing what you are drawing. Do this exercise several times with different objects. To create variety, place three or five objects on top of each other. Exercise Four Complete a contour-line drawing using a piece of furniture as a model. If possible, choose a curvy historic chair. If necessary, complete warm-up exercises to make sure your hand is relaxed and loose. Look at the furniture piece while keeping your pencil on the paper. Starting with the longest lines or edges, try to trace the edges and folds of the furni- ture. Move your pencil slowly to capture the furniture details, recording just what you see. When the edge of the furniture piece changes direction, so should your pencil. After completing this contour drawing, put a piece of tracing paper over it. Then use a black, felt-tip pen to trace the pencil drawing. See Figure 13-19.
