If multiple documents are open for an application, after clicking the
application button on the taskbar, click which document to restore. A
window can also be restored using the
[Alt][Tab]
key combination to cycle
through open application windows.
Managing Open Windows
It is quite common to have multiple application windows open at any given time. An
essential skill for any computer user is managing open windows.
1. Launch Microsoft Word, and click
Blank Document
in the startup screen to begin a new
document.
2. Launch Microsoft Excel, and click
Blank Workbook
in the startup screen to begin a new
k
spreadsheet.
3. Launch Microsoft PowerPoint, and click
Blank Presentation
in the startup screen to begin a
new slide show. There should be a button on the taskbar for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
because all three applications are running.
4. With PowerPoint the active window, click the standard close button (X) in the upper-right
corner of the window to close the program. Since there were no entries or changes made, it
will close immediately. The button on the taskbar corresponding to PowerPoint disappears.
5. If Word is not the active window, make it active by clicking the button on the taskbar
corresponding to Word.
6. Add this line of text to the document:
Introduction to Microsoft
Office.
7. Minimize the Word window by pressing the minimize button in the upper-right corner
of the window. Although the window is no longer visible, Word is still loaded in the
computer’s memory. The button corresponding to Word is still displayed on the taskbar.
8. If the Excel window is not active, make it active by clicking the button on the taskbar
corresponding to Excel.
9. Click cell A1, which is the upper-left cell, so that it is active (surrounded by a thick border).
10. Enter your first name in cell A1. fi
11. Press the
[Tab]
key to fix the content of cell A1 and make cell B1 the active cell. fi
12. Enter your last name in cell B1. Do not be concerned if part of the first name is overwritten. fi
13. Press the
[Enter]
to fi x the content of cell B1 and make cell A2 active. fi
14. Enter this formula in cell A2: =TODAY().
15. Press the
[Enter]
key to fi x the content. Today’s date appears in cell A2. fi
16. Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar to display a shortcut menu.
