Lead room will give the photograph balance and direct the reader’s eye in the direction the subject is running. In strong designs, the text of the story is often placed in that direction. Screens Screens Combining images and text can make for a powerful design. Placing a headline, the text of a story or a caption on top of an image may draw the reader into the text. A screen is an image or other design element used as the background for text (Figure 16.14). The readability of the text must be your fi rst concern when you place it over a screen. To make text easier to read, apply effects, like a drop shadow or a transparent shape behind the text.
