v R. Lee Ivy R. Lee Ivy is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University. He teaches courses in landscape construction, landscape maintenance, fruit and vegetable production, home horticulture, and an introduc- tory course for students interested in horticultural science. He has been an educator for 17 years in the secondary education arena and specializes in hands-on teaching strategies and techniques. His interest in teaching stems from his respect of teachers who inspired him to make an effort, allow for challenges, and strive for high personal achievement. Childhood experiences growing peaches, vegetables, and ornamental plants sparked his interest and subsequent love of horticulture. With a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee in Ornamental Hor- ticulture and Landscape Design and a Master of Science from North Carolina State in Horticultural Science, Ivy pursued teaching opportunities in postsecondary educa- tion. He developed hands-on teaching activities and experiences for his students in conjunction with industry and collegial partnerships. Mr. Ivy is also involved with various facets of student life, such as the Horticulture Club and Horticulture Com- petition Team. Travel and competition preparations allow for enhanced side-by-side partnerships with students. Most of his teaching is traditional face-to-face instruction, but he has also developed an award-winning online educational platform of project- based horticultural activities for college credit through the undergraduate certifi cate program and Ag-Idea, an educational partnership with universities across the United States. His efforts include recruiting the next generation of horticultural profession- als through 4-H, the FFA Organization, and various career fairs. He intends to edu- cate for sustainable landscape systems, safe food production, and a productive and rewarding livelihood. In addition to teaching and advising, Mr. Ivy networks with green industry employers to foster job and internship opportunities for his students. A practicing landscape designer, Mr. Ivy is a Certifi ed Pesticide Applicator and Plant Professional statewide and Landscape Industry Certifi ed nationally.
