Types of Hardscapes When installing a new landscape, homeowners typically request that a type of hardscape also be included. Most hardscapes are built for functionality however, they also serve as an important aesthetic feature. The hardscape may be a simple stone walkway to the front door, a wooden deck for family dinners, or an elaborate walkway that surrounds a pool, Figure 15-1. The most successful hardscapes fulfi ll the client’s needs and complement both the softscape and the home. Walkways Walkways are hardscapes that provide access to and from entryways, invite visitors to walk through the garden, and provide a clear and safe means of accomplishing chores, such as taking out the trash.
