Topdressing Topdressing is the action of applying material over the top of a newly installed hardscape to fi ll in voids between the hardscape materials. The top- dressing material is compacted or washed into the spaces between the hard- scape materials to fi ll the spaces to prevent shifting and create a stronger surface, Figure 15-29. Common topdress materials include manufactured or polymeric sand. Manufactured sand has jagged edges that bind tightly to help lock the units in place. Polymeric sand, once wet, forms an impermeable bar- rier preventing weed seed germination.
