Some wheel bearings are held in place with a snap
ring and can be slid from the knuckle once the snap ring is
removed. Many wheel bearings are pressed into the bear-
ing carrier or the steering knuckle, and the wheel hub is
pressed into the bearing. The first step in servicing this type
of assembly is to press the hub from the bearing with a
hydraulic press and a proper adapter plate, Figure 15-17.
The bearing can then be removed from the carrier or
knuckle with a puller.
To replace some wheel hub and bearing assemblies,
the steering knuckle must be removed from the vehicle.
The knuckle is removed by separating it from the upper
ball joint and the strut rod assembly. After reinstalling the
knuckle, the front end of the vehicle must be aligned.
