176 Manual Drive Trains and Axles Copyright by Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. the second gear is already engaged, the transmission begins driving in second. While the transmission is in second, the first gear disengages and the third gear engages. Because the odd gear clutch is not applied, the third gear is not effective. In Figure 8-41, the odd gear clutch applies and the even gear clutch releases. The third gear clutch is engaged and the transmission is driving in third gear. While the transmis- sion is in third, the second gear disengages and the fourth gear engages. Because the even gear clutch is not applied, the fourth gear is not effective. For fourth gear, the even gear clutch applies and drives through the fourth gear, Figure 8-42. The odd clutch disen- gages. The third gear disengages and the fifth gear engages but is ineffective. In fifth, Figure 8-43, the transmission is driving through the odd clutch and fifth gear. The even clutch releases but the fourth gear remains engaged although it is ineffective. Shift Sequence—Downshifts Downshifts are essentially the reverse of upshifts. To downshift from fifth to fourth, for instance, the odd gear clutch releases and the even gear clutch applies. Since the fourth gear is already engaged, power passes through the even gear and fourth gear to the output shaft. To shift from fourth to third, the odd clutch applies, the even clutch Figure 8-39. In first gear, the power flows through the odd gear clutch and first gear as shown by the blue shading in the illustration.
