324 Section 4 Manufacturing Process Database
A typical setup with a single-end tenoning
machine might consist of several tenoning heads,
coping heads, a cutoff saw, and a movable carriage.
When using a machine such as this, the operator
clamps the stock to the carriage. The role of the car-
riage is to transport the stock to the tenoning heads.
The tenoning heads make the face and shoulder cuts.
The stock is moved to the coping heads, which cut
contours on the shoulders. The stock is then carried
to the cutoff saw, which trims the tenon to the proper
length.
Kerfing is an interesting process that combines
forming and separating. Kerfing is done to create
bends in the workpiece with either solid wood or
panels. Kerfs, or slits, are cut close together using a
table saw. The cuts that are too deep will result in
the wood cracking. If the cuts are too shallow, the
wood will not bend without breaking. After bending
the wood to the desired shape, the kerfs are filled
using glue or wood filler. Engineered woods, such
as medium density fiberboard (MDF), are bent using
kerfing. See Figure 21-26.
Questions for Review and Discussion
1. What causes kickback on a table saw? How can
this be avoided?
2. What method could be used to remove warp
from a 1″ × 10″ (2.5 cm × 25.4 cm) board? What is
a disadvantage of this method?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of
using a right-angle butt joint over a mortise-and-
tenon joint?
4. What would be the best saw to use for plywood
patterns with small radii and intricate shapes?

workpiece so it can be bent into the desired shape. Kerfing
can be done on a table saw or bandsaw. B—The kerfs are
filled with glue after bending. (www.stusshed.com)
