Chapter 1 Marketing and You
Strengthen the skills that you have and set
a goal to improve those that need additional
work. For example, if you need to improve your
writing skills, then consider taking a writing
course now or in the near future. If you are a
strong leader, look for additional opportunities to
lead. Consider running for president of a Career
and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) or
volunteer to chair a school or work event. DECA
is the CTSO for marketing students.
The career opportunities in marketing
are endless. Remember that careers are
constantly changing. By the time you finish

titles that do not exist today.
Five Levels of Careers
In each career area, there are multiple
opportunities for employment. The posi-
tions are generally grouped by skill levels or
education.
An entry-level position is usually a
odqrnm›qrsnqadfhmmhmfina-Hsqdpthqdr
very little training. Entry-level positions
in marketing include a retail salesperson,
market research interviewers, assistant
‘bbntmschqdbsnq+itmhnqr‘kdr‘rrnbh‘sd+nq
event worker.
A career-level position requires employees
to have the skills and knowledge for continued
employment and advancement in a field.
Career-level positions in marketing include
sales promotion coordinators, marketing
specialist, customer-insights specialist, buyer
trainee, and account executive.
A specialist-level position requires special-
ized knowledge and skills in a specific
field of study but does not supervise other
employees. Specialist-level positions in
marketing include public relations specialist,
industrial sales agent, merchandiser, and
assistant product analyst.
A supervisory-level position requires special-
ized knowledge and skills and has management
responsibility over other employees. Supervi-
sory-level positions in marketing include public
relations manager, product manager, marketing
research supervisor, merchandise manager, and
national sales manager.
An executive level is the highest level posi-
tion responsible for the planning, organizing,
and management of a company. Executive-
level positions in marketing include vice
president of marketing, vice president of
merchandising, and vice president of sales.
