Understanding Place Value
Place value is a basic element of a number system. A digit’s position, or place, in a number
determines the value of the digit. Each place represents ten times the place to its right. This is a base
ten system. The number shown below is seven trillion, eight hundred sixty-three billion, one hundred
fi fty-nine million, two hundred thirty-seven thousand, fi ve hundred eighty-four and one thousand eight
