Example 22-1
3 000 meters is written as 3 kilometers; 6/1 000 meters is written as 6 millimeters.
When the number is written with symbols, the symbol for the multiplier is written
as a prefi x to the symbol for the unit (m for meter).
Example 22-2
3 000 meters is written as 3 km; 6/1 000 meters is written 6 mm.
Reading a Metric Ruler
Metric rulers often have one edge graduated in millimeters and the other edge
graduated in half millimeters. The centimeters are generally marked on the ruler.
One inch is approximately 2.54 centimeters or 25.4 millimeters. Millimeters can be
counted from the nearest centimeter graduation, but do not mix multipliers. For
example, write 65 millimeters, not 6 centimeters and 5 millimeters.
