Do the operations in parentheses fi rst.
7 + 12 – 32
Reduce the exponent next (explained in Units 36 and 37).
7 + 12 – 9
Do addition and subtraction from left to right.
7 + 12 – 9 = 10
Once the problem is solved, ask yourself, “Does this answer seem reasonable?”
