Vehicle fluids include engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and other liquids. When working as a technician, you must be proficient with checking and changing vehicle fluids. Service station attendants, oil change techni- cians, and even master technicians must check, add, or replace fluids. Your first job might involve working in an oil change shop or a tire specialty shop. Apprentice technicians “cut their teeth” doing fluid service, grease jobs, rotating and changing tires, and light mechanical repairs. Therefore, this chapter is extremely important to your future employment. It is your chance to learn basic service tasks essential to what may be your first job in an auto shop. Study this material carefully. The last section of the chapter discusses recycling. To help save our environment, you should recycle as many automotive parts, fluids, and materi- als as possible.
