Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. 62 Section 1 Introduction to Automotive Technology Always wear rubber electrician’s gloves (rated for 1,000 volts) when working on a high-voltage drive train system. The thick rubber gloves will prevent electric shock if you accidentally touch a conductor carrying high voltage and current. You must also use fully insu- lated tools to service the high-power cable connections on the battery. See Figure 5‑12. Most hybrids and EVs have a main power cutoff switch or high-voltage disconnect near the output cables of the battery pack. This switch allows you to disconnect the HV battery from the rest of the hybrid powertrain system. It should be turned to the off position or disabled before anyone works on the vehicle. Physical Injury Physical injuries, such as cuts, broken bones, and strained backs, can result from many types of accidents. Preventable accidents are often the cause of physical injuries. For example, injuries from slipping on a greasy floor or improperly lifting heavy objects are preventable by keeping the shop floor clean and using proper lifting techniques. Warning Some late-model cars have heated windshields. The alternators on these vehicles are designed to put out more than 100 volts ac to warm the windshield quickly. This is enough voltage to cause electric shock. Work carefully around this high voltage. +HEALTH ^FIRE *REACTIVE 1 0 0 HAZARD RATING 0 – LEAST 1 – SLIGHT 2 – MODERATE 3 – SERIOUS 4 – SEVERE PRODUCT NAME: HT 0801 AKRYA Cut 1 2 PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENT FROM PRODUCT LABEL WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Safety data sheets must be readily available to ensure technicians and emergency personnel know what chemical they are dealing with and the safety or first-aid measures that must be taken if there is an accident.
