Apply talcum powder to the clean area. 3. Lower the vehicle from the lift and drive it several miles or carefully run it on the lift for 10–15 minutes. 4. Raise the vehicle (if necessary) and check the area around the suspected leak. Warning The vehicle must be raised and supported in a safe manner. Always use approved lifts or jacks and jack stands. Does the powder show streaks of oil, fuel, or coolant? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, what type of fluid is leaking and where does it appear to be coming from? _ _________________________________________________________________________ Black Light Method 1. Ensure that the engine has enough oil or coolant. Add oil or coolant as needed. 2. Add fluorescent dye to the unit through the filler plug, being careful not to spill dye on the outside of the engine. 3. Lower the vehicle from the lift and drive it several miles, or carefully run it on the lift for 10–15 minutes. 4. Raise the vehicle, if necessary. Warning The vehicle must be raised and supported in a safe manner. Always use approved lifts or jacks and jack stands. 5. Turn on the black light and direct it toward the area around the suspected leak. See Figure 7-1. Does the black light show the presence of dye? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, where does the dye appear to be coming from? _ _________________________________________________________________________ 6. Consult your instructor about the steps to take to correct the leak. Steps may include some of the following: Tightening fasteners. Replacing gaskets or seals. See Jobs 3 and 4. Replacing a cracked, broken, or punctured part.
