Changes in 2014 NEC
Every edition of the Code includes many improve-
ments. The following are some of the biggest changes
you will find in the 2014 NEC:
• The nominal threshold voltage has increased
from 600 V to 1000 V. The higher voltage is
needed for the installation for solar photovoltaic
equipment.
• New articles include:
• Article 393—Low-Voltage Suspended
Ceiling Power Distribution Systems
• Article 646—Modular Data Centers
• Article 728—Fire-Resistive Cable Systems
• Article 750—Energy Management Systems
• Section 110.26(E)(2). Clear work space is now
required around outdoor equipment installations.
• Section 210.8. GFCI protection is now required
in dwelling unit laundry areas and for kitchen
dishwasher outlets.
• Section 201.12. AFCI protection is now required
in kitchens and laundry areas. AFCI protection is
now required for hard-wired devices, as well as
receptacles.
• Table 250.102(C). A new table for sizing
grounded conductors and bonding jumpers has
been added.
• Section 310.15(B)(7). Table 310.15 (sizing
services and feeders for dwelling units) has been
deleted. The method for sizing these conductors
is now explained in the text of this section.
• Section 406.9(B)(1). All enclosures and covers
for 15- and 20-ampere receptacles in wet loca-
tions are now required to be extra duty type.
