Chapter 12 Branch Circuits and Feeders 173 Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Sign and outline lighting loads are consid- ered continuous loads. Therefore, if the rating of the sign and outline fi xtures is greater than fi 960 volt-amperes (1200 × 0.8 = 960), the circuit will be greater than 1200 volt-amperes. Additional Lighting Loads Additional lighting loads should be computed separately from the general lighting load and then added to the general lighting load. Loads for additional lighting, such as security light- ing, parking area lighting, sidewalk lighting, roadway lighting, and stadium lighting, are cal- culated using the actual load. These are consid- ered continuous loads where appropriate. The additional lighting load must be treated sepa- rately from the general lighting load for compu- tation purposes. Gen ne ral lighting = 3200 ft2 × 1/ /4 VA/ft2 loa o ad (storage) = 800 VA General lighting = 6400 ft2 f × 3 VA/ft2 load (showroom) = 19,200 9 VA General lighting = 800 VA + 19,200 VA load = 20,000 VA The show-window w lighting load is based on 200 VA per linear r f fo ot: Show-window o = 45′ × 200 VA/ft lighting load oa = 9000 VA The minim mu m load for the sign lighting is s used: Sign n lighting l = 1200 VA Now the th total lighting load can be calculated al by addin i ng the parts together: Total lighting load = 20,000 VA VA + 9000 VA + 1200 VA A = 30,200 0 0 VA These loads are all continuou o us , so the total load is multiplied by a factor of 1.25 1 to determine the circuit requirements. 30,200 VA × 1.25 = = 37,750 VA SAMPLE PROBLEM 12-5 Problem: A A hardware store measures 80′ 0 × 120′. A portion o of the building (80′ ′ × 40′) is s used for storage. or The remainder of the build il di ng is used as a showroom. There is a total l of 45′ of show ow windows, and there is one outdoor ut sign. What Wh is the total lighting load for this th building? 8 80 ′ 80′ 40′ 25′ 20′ Storage area Solution: ti Each type of lighting load is is com- puted te separately and then combined d to deter- mine mi the total lighting load. First, th t he general lighting li loads for the two areas of f t th e store are calculated: Storage area = 80′ × 40′ 0 ′ = 3200 0 ft2 f Showroom area = 80′ 0 ′ × 80′ = 6400 ft2 Table 220.3(A) lists s unit loads for storage and showroom as a 1/4 VA/ft2 and 3 VA/ft2, respectively: (Continued)
