282 Modern Metalworking Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Typical bending operations possible on press brakes are illustrated in Figure 17-17. Some tube benders 7 7 can be used to bend both tubing and solid stock, Figure 17-18. 17.2.8 Roll Forming Roll forming shapes a flat metal strip by passing it g through a series of rollers, gradually forming it to the required shape, Figure 17-19. The process is extremely rapid and almost any shape is possible. GREEN METALWORKING GREEN METALWORKING Environmentally Friendly Machines Companies today design and produce metalworking equipment with people and the environment in mind. Large punching and shearing centers are made with brush worktables, Figure 17-20. This has greatly reduced the noise levels when the machines are oper- ating. The use of high-efficiency components has also helped reduce energy consumption. These compo- nents monitor the demand on the machine and allow it to go into stand-by mode when the system is not being used. Computer control of the machines has also optimized the use of materials. There is very little waste because of the optimization that computeriza- tion provides. LVD Strippit Figure 17-15. A—An entry-level hydraulic press brake with touchscreen control.
