MACHINING Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Chapter 26 Milling Machines 475 • Remove all rings, bracelets, earrings, wristwatches, and other jewelry prior to working on a milling machine. • Do not operate a mill unless all guards and safety features are in place. • Do not permit your clothing to become saturated with cutting fluids or oil. Greasy clothing can be a fire hazard. Launder work clothes frequently. • Select and mount the proper cutter, and see that it revolves in the proper direction. • Use only correctly fitting wrenches on the machine. Keep the machine clear of unnecessary hand tools. • Use the proper spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut. • Disengage the manual feed handwheels when automatic feed is to be used. • Never activate the rapid traverse movement while the cutter is positioned for a cut. • Stop the machine before attempting to make adjustments, measurements, or remove chips. • Use a brush to remove chips, Figure 26-85. Never remove chips with your hands or compressed air. • Remove the guards only to make adjustments, and then only with the power turned off at the main electrical panel to prevent the machine from being turned on accidentally. Replace the guards immediately after the adjustments have been made. • Use a heavy cloth or gloves for protection when handling milling cutters. Avoid using your bare hands. • Get help to move large work and heavy machine accessories such as a vise, dividing head, or rotary table. • Use the correct size workholding device for the job. Be sure the workholding device is mounted solidly to the table. Clamp all work solidly. Spring or vibration can cause thin cutters to jam and shatter. • Make sure that unauthorized persons are outside the safety zone of the machine before starting it. • Avoid talking to anyone while operating a mill. Do not permit anyone to alter adjustments on the machine while you are operating it. You are the only one who should turn the machine on or off, or make adjustments. • Know the location of the machine’s stop switch or lever, as well as any emergency stop buttons (or switches). • Keep clear of the revolving cutter. Do not reach over or near the cutter. • Release all automatic feed controls when the job is completed. • Keep the floor around your machine clear of chips. Wipe up spilled cutting fluid immediately. Spread oil-absorbent compound on slippery floors. • Place oily rags in approved metal containers. Never put them in your locker. • Always wash your hands with soap and water after using cutting fluids or compounds. • Treat all small cuts and skin punctures as poten- tial infections. Be sure they are cleaned and treated properly. Report any injury, no matter how minor, to your instructor or supervisor. Photo courtesy of Weiler Corp. Figure 26-85.
