PROCEDURE Offset Bend before an Obstruction 1. Measure the distance between the conn n n ne c- tion point and the obstruction. 2. Measure the height of the obstruc u u ct ct ion. 3. Consult an offset bend chart or or or calculator to ff determine the angle you would wo o like to use for the offset bends. Note te e the shrink amount ff and the distance betw we we en bends for your chosen angle. 4. Add the shrink am a a m mo unt to the distance you yo measured in step st st 1. Measure from the e start- s ing end of f th t t he conduit you will bend nd and make a mark m m at this calculated distance. d is 5. Using g g t th e distance between be b en ds found in ste t ep ep 3, mark the conduit back ac from the first fi m ma rk. The new mark repr p re sents the begin- ning of the first bend. d. fi 6. Place the conduit nd bender handle on th t he floor and se s ec ure it in place with your ou foot. fl Position n the t conduit in the bender d so that the firs r st mark (beginning of first fi fi r bend) is fi fi aligned ig with the arrow on the th bender head. See S Figure 10-10. 7. 7 Bend the conduit to the th angle determined in step 3, being care ar ef ul not to kink it. In this example, the angle ng is 45°. 8. Without removing mo the conduit from the e bender, rotate o ta the conduit 180° and slide s li de it until the h e second mark is aligned with w it h t th e ar- row. . Make M sure the angled section io n o of conduit is s perfectly p parallel with the bend b en de r handle. 9. Bend B the conduit to the ang n gl gl e e determined in step 3, being careful not o t to to kink it. 10. Confirm that the conduit du it clears the obstruction. fi Making an Offset Bend (After Measuring and Marking) Step 1. Position the conduit in the bender so that the first mark (beginning of the first bend) is aligned with the arrow. Step 2. Bend the conduit to the desired angle. Step 3. Slide the conduit in the bender, rotate 180°, and align the second mark with the arrow. Step 4. Bend the conduit to the desired angle. Step 5. Install the conduit.
