Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Motorcycles: Fundamentals, Service, Repair 342 5. Use two tire irons or levers to pull the bead over the lip of the rim, Figure 16-37C. Keep working the tire irons around the rim until the tire bead comes off the wheel. Insert the tire iron on the same side as the valve and raise the bead over the rim. Always use a rim protector when using tire irons. 6. Pull the tube out of the tire once one bead is removed, Figure 16-37D. 7. Remove the other tire bead by prying with the irons, Figure 16-37E. You may need to hit the tire with a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer to free it from the wheel. 8. After removing the tire, pull the rubber rim strip off . See Figure 16-37F. Check under the strip for problems, including rust, spokes that protrude too far into the wheel, and damaged rim locks. To remove a tire and disassemble it from the wheel of an ATV or UTV, proceed as follows: 1. Place the vehicle on level ground. Support the vehicle by jack or lift. Remove the wheel by removing the wheel lug nuts. 2. After removing the air valve cap, release the air pressure by depressing the nozzle or removing the valve stem core. See Figure 16-38. 3. Dismount the bead from the rim completely, as shown in Figure 16-39. 4. Using a set of tire irons or levers, separate the tire from the wheel. When using tire irons, do not scratch or hit the sealing portion (hump) of the wheel. Th is may cause an air leak. Note Most ATV and UTV tires are removable from only one side of the rim because of the shape of the rim. Notice the shallow side and the deep dish side in Figure 16-40. Tire Installation A tire changing machine makes tire replacement easier and helps prevent damage to cast and stamped wheels. See Figure 16-41. If the tire has a balance dot (paint mark), install the tire with this mark aligned with the valve stem. If the tire has a directional arrow, install the tire with the arrow pointing in the direction of rotation, Figure 16-42. Goodheart-Willcox Publisher Figure 16-38.
