Safety in the shop is a matter of common sense. Taking safety for granted can result in a serious accident or injury. This chapter discusses shop safety and procedures to be used to protect the technician, the customer’s motorcycle, and the environment. Safety Notices In this text, as well as in most service manuals, the words warning, caution, and note have specific meanings. Understanding the different meanings of these words is vital to the technician’s safety. A warning or danger notice emphasizes areas or improper proce- dures where personal injury or even death could result. Mechanical damage to the motorcycle may also occur. Cautions are written to prevent the technician from making an error that could damage the motorcycle or one of its systems. Failure to heed a caution could cause permanent mechanical damage. Per- sonal injury is unlikely, but possible. A note provides added information that helps to complete a par- ticular procedure or make a task easier. Disregarding a note may cause inconvenience but usually does not result in damage or per- sonal injury, although that is a possibility. Personal safety is the number one consideration when working with motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and scooters. Safety is not a simple matter of dos and don’ts it requires understanding the job and using common sense.
