2 Tyler Olson/Shutterstock.com Chapter Outline Section 1.1 Role and Responsibilities Section 1.2 Professionalism and Boundaries Welcome to the Chapter This chapter provides information you will need to understand your role and demonstrate your responsibilities as a holistic nursing assistant. You will learn about the qualities, behaviors, and professionalism expected of a successful holistic nursing assistant. Further, you will explore the personal and professional boundaries within which a nursing assistant must work. These boundaries are important, as they define what a nursing assistant can and cannot do as a caregiver. When you become a holistic nursing assistant, you will care for many different people. You may deliver care to patients. Patients are people who receive care in a healthcare facility, such as a hospital. Patients need immediate care due to illness or disease and often can expect recovery. A patient’s stay in a hospital is usually short. You may also deliver care to residents. Residents are people who need ongoing care over a longer period of time. Residents are older and live in long-term care facilities due to age, illness, or inability to care for themselves at home. During your career as a nursing assistant, you may work in many different healthcare facilities and, therefore, may care for both patients and residents. Because this text focuses on long-term care, emphasis will be placed on caring for residents. You are now ready to start this chapter, The Holistic Nursing Assistant.
