10 Chapter 1 SECTION 1.1 Review and Assessment Key Terms Mini Glossary activities of daily living (ADLs) actions that residents take during a typical day includes such actions as bathing, walking, eating, dressing, and toileting. ambulating moving about or walking. certification a credential earned when a person has completed the designated education, training, and testing that prepares him or her for a specific field, discipline, or professional advancement. certified nursing assistant (CNA) a person who has successfully completed the education and training needed to take and pass the CNA state certification competency examination scope of practice is regulated by the state, and CNAs are supervised by registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs/LVNs) in some states, CNAs are called nurse aides, licensed nursing assistants, or registered nursing assistants. compassion the desire to help another person who is suffering or in pain. contaminated soiled or dirty as a result of contact or mixture with something that is not clean. empower to give a person the power to control his or her own destiny and decision making. holistic care care that is sensitive to a person’s values and desires and that integrates a person’s physical (body), emotional (mind), and spiritual (spirit) needs to help achieve the highest level of well-being possible. hospice a healthcare facility or service that provides supportive care for those who are terminally ill and their families is available on-site at health- care facilities or in private homes. infection control policies and procedures used to lessen the risk of diseases and infections spreading. job description a written document that describes the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for a particular position. licensed nursing staff nursing staff members who have passed state licensing examinations that allow them to perform healthcare tasks within their scope of practice RNs and LPNs/LVNs. licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) a person who has successfully completed the education and training needed to take and pass an LPN/LVN state licensing examination scope of practice is regulated by the state, and LPNs/LVNs provide care under the supervision of an RN care can include monitoring and reporting, preparing and giving medications, inserting catheters, and performing wound care. patients people who visit a healthcare facility, such as a hospital, for a physical examination or for the treatment of an illness or disease. registered nurse (RN) a person who has successfully completed the education and training needed to take and pass an RN state licensing examination delivers nursing care, assesses residents, and provides nursing diagnoses also plans, implements, and evaluates care. residents people staying in a long- term care facility due to age, illness, or inability to care for themselves at home. scope of practice the specific responsibilities, procedures, and actions of a healthcare provider, as permitted by state regulations actions within the scope of practice are allowed only when special educational requirements have been met and when knowledge and skill competency are demonstrated. vital signs the rates or values of a person’s body temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure.
