Writing Imagine you are a member of the committee charged with preparing the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Identify a nutrition topic you believe should be addressed and formulate a question as if you were submitting it to the Nutrition Evidence Library (NEL). Be sure to use exact language and vocabulary that is appropriate to the field of nutrition and the expertise of the readers. 24. Math A meal plan based on the Food Lists provides for the following food choices: 2 starches, 1 fruit, 2 lean proteins, 1 nonstarchy vegetable, 1 fat-free milk, 1 fat. Calculate the total grams of carbohydrate, protein, and fat in this meal plan, as well as the calories provided by this meal. 25. Listening Find a podcast or video of an individual speaking on a nutrition topic. Evaluate the speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence. Identify any misleading content or unclear evidence. Be sure to determine the speaker’s credentials and his or her authority on this topic. Write a brief analysis and share with the class. 26. Math Use Appendix C Dietary Reference Intakes to calculate the range of Recommended Dietary Allowance for iron for individuals six months of age and older. (Hint: range is the difference between the lowest and highest values in a set of numbers.) Include values for women who are pregnant or lactating in your calculation. 27. Math Jenna’s food plan calls for 2,000 calories per day. Her goal is to select nutrient-dense foods as often as possible. One morning, she began reading the Nutrition Facts panel for the whole-grain bread she was toasting for breakfast. She discovered that each slice contains 3 grams of dietary fiber. She knows her Daily Value for dietary fiber is 28 grams. If Jenna has 2 slices of toast, what Percent Daily Value of fiber has she consumed? 28. Career Readiness Practice As a new employee, you are taking on the challenge of keeping your mind and body healthy. Part of this challenge includes taking the initiative to maintain a healthy body weight. Use the MyPlate Plan to plan healthful meals and to keep track of your food consumption and physical activity. Continue to use these tools found on ChooseMyPlate.gov for one month or more. After a couple of months, write a summary indicating how healthful eating and adequate physical activity have helped you maintain a healthy body weight.
