Chapter 2 Families and Parents 45
Parents who had problems with their
own parents tend to carry feelings of conflict
into their parenting role. They often think
negatively about their children’s behavior
and blame them for family problems. These
parents often waver between being gentle
and angry; some even become explosive and
abusive.
Community
The communities in which they live
influence families. For example, families who
live in an urban area have different concerns
from families who live in rural areas. People
in urban and rural areas may worry about
high rates of crime and violence. In a rural

area, people may worry about isolation from
others and opportunities for their children.
Each community differs in the amount

find them inaccessible due to distance or
lack of public transportation. Smaller towns
may have fewer resources, but their services
are sometimes more personalized. A family
might already know and trust the people
who work in these agencies and programs.
Each community passes regulations and
laws that reflect the needs of its members.
These laws may affect individuals and
families within that community. For instance,
a community may determine what schools
children must attend, where houses can be
built, and what the penalties are for certain
