This makes the monopod a favorite for those
who shoot sports and similar activities. A
typical monopod has three to four telescoping
sections, allowing it to extend to about 5′ for use
and collapse down to about 18″ for storage. All
monopods have some device for mounting a
camera at the top. Ideally, the mounting device
should swivel and tilt to adjust the angle of the
camera and be capable of being locked in place.
The monopod works in combination with the
photographer’s body to provide a firm and steady
support. As shown in Figure 2-38, by spreading
your feet apart slightly and then leaning into a
slightly angled monopod, you can create a firm
three-point support for the camera. Unlike the
more cumbersome tripod, a monopod can be
quickly picked up, relocated, and set up again at a
different location to follow action.
Shoulder Stocks
Wildlife photographers, especially those
whose subjects move rapidly and unpredictably,
frequently mount their cameras on a shoulder
stock, Figure 2-39. Since these photographers
typically use lenses of 300 mm and longer, the
rifle-like stock helps them to better track their
target and steady the camera during exposure.
Clamping Devices
One of the most widely used types of
clamping support devices is the vehicle window
clamp, Figure 2-40. Since wild creatures
frequently allow a car or truck to approach them
more closely than a human on foot, window
clamps are the mount of choice for this type of
photography. Before shooting, the vehicle engine
must be shut off to eliminate vibration.

Figure 2-38. By forming a three-point support with the
monopod and her two legs, the photographer provides a
steady camera platform. This is a particular advantage when
using a longer lens, which magnifies unwanted movement.

lens is used to photograph birds and similar types of
fast-moving subjects, the shoulder stock is a handy
accessory.
