Chapter 2 Camera Handling, Care, and Support

Quick-release systems built into many
tripod heads are convenient for photographers
because they allow a camera to be quickly
mounted or dismounted without changing any
position adjustments. The two components of
the quick-release system are a special mounting
plate fastened to the camera and a latching
mechanism that is attached to the tripod head.
See Figure 2-47. A lever or spring control on the
latching mechanism allows the mounting plate
and camera to be quickly installed or released.
Tripod Advantages and Disadvantages
Some photographers make virtually every
exposure with a camera mounted on a tripod;
others use tripods rarely, if at all. The type of
camera and the type of photography determine
whether using a tripod will be an advantage or
disadvantage.
Reasons for using a tripod include the following:
Improved image sharpness through
eliminating of camera shake.
Precise camera positioning for better
composition.

mounting plate that attaches to the camera body and
fits into a latching mechanism on the tripod head.
Some quick-release systems include mounting plates
custom-made for use with specific camera models.

Reasons for not using a tripod include the
following:
Weight and cumbersome shape, especially
when the tripod must be carried some
distance.
Time-consuming setup and resulting lack of
mobility.
Possible tripping hazard to others in confined
areas. Many museums ban tripods for this
reason.
Choosing a Tripod
Your camera type and the kind of
photography you undertake are major
factors when choosing a tripod. Consider the
following points:
How much weight must the tripod support? A
compact digital camera weighs only a few
ounces; most SLR cameras with a zoom lens
attached weigh a pound or more. Many
medium format cameras will be in the 4 lb to
6 lb range, while the large format field and
studio cameras may weigh as little as 8 lb or
more than 20 lb.

hands free for other tasks, such as using a card, hand, or
cap to prevent flare from light from falling directly on the lens.
