explain how to keep relationships with grandparents strong.
The fi rst bond most people develop is with their parents. Then their
relationships often include siblings and other relatives. Relationships with
family members are likely to continue throughout life.
Relationships with Parents
A relationship is a special bond or link between people. In relationships,
you learn how to get along with others. You also learn more about yourself.
Sometimes relationships with parents become strained during the teen
years. Have you ever complained that your parents do not understand you?
Have you ever asked “Why don’t you trust me?” or “Why can’t I go there?”
Many conversations between parents and teens include these statements.
What happens during the teen years to cause a smooth parent-child
relationship to change?
One family member that is changing a lot right now is you. Sometimes
your parents do not see these changes right away. Perhaps they do not want to
see them. Maybe they are reluctant to see you growing up. Therefore, they may
continue to treat you as a child.
This can be a diffi cult time for both you and your parents. Relations can
become strained. You want more independence. They are afraid to give you
more freedom. You feel you can be trusted. They are afraid you might make
a mistake. You want to be able to go more places and do more things on your
own. They are afraid for your safety and well-being. It seems like there is a
continual struggle.
It is normal for teens to want to get on with the business of living. It is
normal for parents to want what is best for their children. It is also normal
for these two desires to cause confl ict on occasion. All family members need
to work at maintaining harmony within the family. With love, patience, and
respect, families can achieve this goal.
