40 Unit 1 Your Development and Relationships
Grandparents are sometimes
not as busy as your parents. If they
have more time on their hands,
they may be able to help you with
your activities. They may enjoy
taking you shopping or attending
a special event with you. They
may enjoy hearing about your
opinions, interests, and hobbies.
A sympathetic grandparent may
be able to offer advice or help you
solve your problems, 2-6.
Sometimes, as grandparents get
very old, they may not be able to
continue their usual activities. You
and your family may need to care
for them. They may need your help
in getting around. You could help
them with their shopping or e-mails.
Grandparents who are unable
to live alone may move into your
home. This situation will require
all family members to make
adjustments. You will need to help
your grandparents feel welcome. You can respect your grandparents’ privacy
and give them a place for their belongings. Grandparents will need to feel they
are not a burden. They need to be as independent as possible.
Grandparents may suffer from poor health. Some grandparents have
trouble remembering things. Others may stay mentally alert, but have physical
disabilities. Their disabilities may be mild, moderate, or severe. These may
cause a grandparent to walk with diffi culty or need to use a wheelchair. Your
grandparent may need to have special services by trained people. Your visits
and attention will be very important at this time.
Your relationship with your grandparents will remain strong as you share
your time with them. Your caring concern will help keep them alert and happy
for many years.
2-6 Grandparents may offer advice based on their
many life experiences.
