Telephone hotlines are an immediate source of support for people
coping with a crisis. Most hotlines are toll-free numbers a person can call at
any time of the day or night. Telephone hotline operators are often trained
to deal with a specifi c crisis such as drug and alcohol abuse or domestic
violence. They can also refer people to local community resources that might
be available.
Support groups consist of a group of people who meet regularly to
discuss common challenges and to help one another cope. Support groups
are often available for people who abuse drugs and alcohol. Some groups are
specifi cally for the family members of these people. Support groups may also
offer help for families coping with life-threatening illnesses, disabilities, or
grief over the loss of a loved one.
