Chapter 10 Marketing
Communication Skills
Reading. This chapter is about the importance of marketing to the success of
business. After you read the chapter, identify and analyze the audience, purpose,
and message of the author’s writing.
Writing. Generate ideas for writing a paper that describes the concept of
marketing as you interpret it. Gather information to support your thoughts and
ideas. Keep careful and accurate records of any sources that you use as references.
Create the notes that you could use to write a paper to distribute for discussion
with your classmates.
Speaking. To become career ready, it will be important to learn how to communicate clearly and
effectively by using reason. Create an outline that includes information about the importance of
loyalty programs for businesses. Consider your audience as you prepare the information. Using
the outline, make a presentation to your class.
Internet Research
Customer Relationships. Explore the topic of the importance of customer relationships for a
business. Use multiple sources for your research. Take notes on key ways a business can build
relationships with its target market and why this activity is important. Write your findings in
several paragraphs. Cite any sources that you used.
Teamwork
Working with a partner, identify advertisements in a newspaper or magazine that you agree are
appealing to the reader. Select several examples and create a poster. Sort the advertisements by
target market. What did you learn from this experience? Share your project with the class.
Portfolio Development
Community Service. Community service is an important quality to show in a
portfolio. Serving the community shows that a candidate is well rounded and
socially aware. In this activity, you will create a list of your contributions to
nonprofit organizations. Many opportunities are available for young people to
serve the community. You might volunteer for a park clean-up project. Perhaps you
might enjoy reading to residents in a senior-living facility. Maybe raising money
for a pet shelter appeals to you. Whatever your interests, there is sure to be a
related service project.
