This string is called the fi le path, which is the drive and folder location of a fi le plus its fi le name. The total number of characters in the fi le path cannot exceed 260 characters. Notice that the path includes the colon (:) for the drive letter and backslashes (\) to indicate where there is a change in folder. The fi le path can be seen in the Properties dialog box. Right-click on a fi le, and click Properties in the shortcut menu. The fi le name is listed at the top of the General tab, and the path to the folder containing the fi le is shown in the Location: area, as shown in Figure 4-2. The full fi le path is the location plus the fi le name. The limit of 260 characters provides ample space for writing a clear and unique name for each fi le and folder. Any character from the keyboard may be used in a name except for a few reserved symbols. Reserved symbols are characters that Windows uses for special meaning. The reserved symbols are shown in Figure 4-3. Although Windows allows spaces in names, spaces cause problems in other software environments. Some software will stop reading the name at the fi rst space. A URL or web address that contains a space will be misinterpreted. For example: http://www.pages.com/my document.doc will be read as: http://www.pages.com/my For this reason, it is best to not use spaces in fi le and folder names.
