Having a good reputation and earning trust are particularly
important traits for all consumer services workers (Figure 8.6). A
reputation for being fair, respectful, and ethical is important in this fi eld.
People’s fi nancial futures are often at stake.

Education, Training, and Experience
Most consumer services careers require postsecondary education,
training, and experience. Consumer advocates in entry-level jobs often
hold a bachelor’s degree in a related fi eld. They may have a degree
in areas such as business, accounting, family and consumer sciences,
political science, sociology, fi nance, or communications. Consumer
educators typically hold related degrees. Some hold degrees in education.
Consumer litigation attorneys need a law degree and regional certifi cation
to practice. Many times, they spend extra time specializing in a particular
area of consumer advocacy.
