advertising in print media—magazines, newspapers, mailers, and
fl yers. About 30 percent of network television time is dedicated to paid
advertising.
Advertisements can be useful to help inform consumers about
products and services. Consumers must be aware, however, that just
because a product is advertised, it is not always good for them. An
advertiser’s goal is to try to get consumers to buy their product. As
with all consumer decisions, consumers need to critically evaluate
advertisements before making any purchasing decisions.
Identifying Sustainable Products
Many consumers are looking to buy sustainable products.
Sustainable relates to a method of using a resource so it does not deplete
or destroy the resource. In today’s society, consumers have much more
knowledge about the depletion or overuse of natural resources and the
need to manage and reuse resources. This concern has led consumers
to practice sustainable shopping (Figure 8.12). Sustainable purchasing
involves buying products that benefi t environmental, social, or human
health.
