Volunteering and Fund-Raising
In the fi eld of consumer services, workers
help people solve fi nancial and consumer
problems. One of the main problems of
many charities is that they lack funds or
other resources for their cause. They rely on
volunteers to help them meet their needs.
Think about different charities with which
you are familiar. Some of these charities may
send donation request cards or hold special
events to raise funds for their cause. Other
organizations may ask for donations of food,
clothing, or other resources they need.
There are many ways you can get
involved in fund-raising for a charity that
interests you. One way you could get involved
is to organize a donation drive. Find out
what donated items an organization accepts
and then set up a place for people to drop off
items. Utilize social media to get the word out
about your fund-raising efforts.
Another way you might help is to
volunteer for a walk/run or other event to
raise awareness about an issue. You could
even set up your own event to raise funds
for a charity. For example, if you like to bake,
you might run a bake sale. If you are good
with math, you could start a tutoring service.
Still another way you could help is by asking
friends to donate to your cause instead of
giving you gifts for your birthday.
To explore volunteering and fund-raising
opportunities, complete the following:
1. Research at least fi ve charities that
interest you to fi nd out how they
handle fund-raising. How do they raise
awareness for their cause? Do they have
special events that you could participate
in, such as a walk/run? Do they need
donations of certain items?
2. Make note of any fund-raising
opportunities that are of special interest
to you. Who would you contact to learn
more about getting involved? Find out as
much information as you can. Then, take
the next step and get involved.

32. CTE career readiness practice Everyone
has a stake in protecting the environment.
Taking steps as an individual to become
more environmentally conscious is a behavior
of responsible citizens. From a business
standpoint, it may also help a company be
more profitable. What actions can businesses
take in the workplace to save energy or other
resources?
33. CTE career readiness practice In the
workplace, environmental awareness is
important. Decisions that businesses make
could have an impact on social and economic
situations in the community. Give an example
of a decision that a business might make
that would have a positive impact on the
community.
34. CTE career readiness practice Clean, pure
drinking water is not available to many people
in various parts of the world. Identify key areas
where this is a problem. What are some cost
effective ways to provide clean, pure drinking
water? What are the social and economic
impacts of countries failing to provide basic
water purification for its citizens? Write a report
of your findings to share with the class.
