Chapter 1 An Introduction to Human Services 15
careers in this fi eld include nannies, child care workers, teachers, and
administrators. Early childhood development and services workers may
work in family homes and early childhood education programs. They
may also work in community centers and corporate or medical child care
centers.
Effective early childhood development and services workers and
educators know about how children develop and grow. They apply
this knowledge through the use of age-appropriate activities and
teaching methods. They consider each child’s strengths, interests,
and culture, while respecting the milestones of the young children in
their care.
Family and Community Services
Family and community services workers are a central part of the
human services industry. They offer advice and assistance to people at
all stages of life. Positions available in family and community services
include emergency and relief workers, adult day care workers, and social
workers. Social workers, in particular, have a high level of specialized
education and experience.
Family and community services workers work with people directly
in the fi eld. They help people cope with and resolve personal issues.
They teach people how to maintain healthy relationships, deal with
crises, or become sober. They assist people following natural disasters or
other crises. Family and community services workers work in schools,
communities, family services, foster care, adoption services, older adult
care, and family health clinics.
Personal Care Services
In personal care services careers, workers provide personal services
for people. Personal care services workers include cosmetologists,
massage therapists, funeral services workers, and personal and home
care aides. Personal care services workers may work in hair salons, spas,
funeral homes, and people’s private homes.
Personal care services workers have a lot of one-on-one interaction with
clients. They provide personal services, such as hair care, nail care, and skin
care. Funeral services workers help people deal with the death of a loved
one. Personal and home care aides help people with daily living skills, such
as feeding, bathing, cooking, or shopping. Sometimes personal and home
care aides simply provide companionship. These services can occur in the
home or be brought to the home, group homes, or community centers.
Entrepreneurial Careers
Entrepreneurial careers offer people an opportunity to establish
and run their own businesses. People who start their own businesses
are called entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs decide which services or goods to
