20 Unit 1 Learning About Human Services
family advocacy, child life, and other related programs. Programs like
these that are interdisciplinary (relating to more than one branch of
knowledge) broadly prepare students for careers in human services. For
human services careers requiring either a master’s or doctorate degree to
advance, related graduate degrees may be found in marriage and family
therapy, psychology, school counseling, social work, or education, among
others (Figure 1.9).
In addition to a degree, some human services careers also require
state licensure, certifi cations, or professional registration. Sometimes
these additional requirements are earned through hours in practice, a
qualifying exam, or a combination of both. In the end, the fact remains
that even some postsecondary education can add thousands of dollars to
personal income over a lifetime.
